This illustrated book takes the Burnham and Bennett plan as a primary point of departure for a new regional planning approach. Comparison with other historical urban-improvement plans for Chicago, including proposals by Frank Lloyd Wright, Jens Jensen, Walter Burley Griffin, and Ludwig Hilberseimer, identifies complementary strengths and common shortcomings. These conclusions inform a regional plan that recognizes and relates the city’s distinct parts and can be implemented gradually. This inaugural publication of the Architects Research Foundation is distributed by the University of Chicago Press and was released in February 2010.
