LAKE FOREST COLLEGE

Lake Forest College, a co-educational, private liberal arts college located 30 miles north of Chicago, Illinois, was founded in 1857 at the same time and by the same individuals who founded the City of Lake Forest. The College, while primarily an undergraduate institution, also offers the Master’s of Liberal Studies degree. We serve over 1,400 students from 45 states and 65 countries.

The Virtual Burnham Initiative emerges from new directions in the College’s American Studies Program—in partnership with Library and Information Technology—with support from faculty in the Anthropology and Education, and the College’s Center for Chicago Programs. This campus VBI coalition works to re-present the legacy of the Plan of Chicago in terms of both its historical origins and contemporary planning applications. This process mirrors the liberal arts mission to combine knowledge across disciplines and to prepare students to become innovative critical thinkers, who, like Burnham, will become leaders in their chosen fields.

Lake Forest College Press, with distribution from Northwestern University Press, wiill also publish Beyond Burnham: An Illustrated History of Planning for the Chicago Region, by Joseph P. Schwieterman and Alan P. Mammoser.
