ILLINOIS RAILWAY MUSEUM

IRM is the nation's largest railroad museum, with more than 400 historic passenger cars, locomotives, street cars, freight cars, "L" cars and buses.  Streeetcars operate on summer weekdays. In addition, a five mile mainline ride is offered on historic railway trains on weekends thru October 5.  Two miles of covered walkways.  Special events, with high ticket prices are scheduled--see irm.org for details.  Collection highlights inlude a 1859 Chicago horse-drawn streetcar, an operating 1936 Nebraska Zephyr, the streamilned Electroliner, 28 displayed steam locomotives, restored Depression-era Pullman cars and much more.

The IRM is pleased to host the Make Big Plans: Burnham's Vision of an American Metropolis exhibit from June 15 - October 25, 2009. Illinois Railway Museum

Chicago was a much different place one-hundred years ago.  This exhibits, City Planning in the Age of Steam and Streetcars,  focuses on transportation issues and how people who used steam trains and streetcars viewed their city in a different way than today's auto-dependent citizens,  The exhibit ties-in with over a dozen locomotives, "L" cars, streetcars and train cars inthe museum collection that were in Chicago at the same time Burnham and Bennett drafted the Plan of Chicago.    [MORE]

Make Big Plans: Daniel Burnham's Vision for the Metropolis

In honor of the 100th anniversary of Daniel Burnham and Edward H. Bennett's Plan of Chicago, the Make Big Plans: Daniel Burnham's Vision of an American Metropolis exhibit, curated by the Newberry, will be on display simultaneously at the Illinois Railway Museum and over 50 public libraries and other venues throughout the metropolitan region.
