URBAN PLANS AND THEIR AGENDAS: ADMITTED, UNADMITTED AND UNNOTICED

Modernizing Paris: 18th, 19th, 20th Centuries

Organized by David van Zanten, Northwestern Professor of Art History.  Featuring Christian Topalov and Isabelle Backouche, Professors in the Urban History seminar of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences So­ciales, Paris.  Part of the department of art history’s “Elizabeth and Todd Warnock Lecture Series.”

Professor Topalov will be discussing her work with the social milieu of planning, especially the re-planning of Paris in the years 1900-1914.

Professor Backouche will be presenting the history of the banks of the Seine in Paris from 1750 to 1850, showing how they changed from the center of Paris commerce and industry to a monumental esplanade and symbol of the city.
