Join us as we take a leisurely drive along the boulevards and through the parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the Olmsted Brothers, Edward Bennett, William LeBaron Jenney, and Jans Jensen. The lakefront parks are part of Daniel Burnham's legacy from the 1909 Plan of Chicago. The south parks tour includes Grant Park, the Museum Campus, as well as Burnham, Jackson, Washington, Sherman, Douglas, and Union Parks.
We will stop for walks through the South Shore Cultural Center and around Lorado Taft's Fountain of Time. We will also see three park buildings designed by Daniel Burnham's firm as well as the remnants of the 1893 Worlds' Columbian Exposition in Jackson Park: the Statue of the Republic, the Wooded Island, and Atwood's Beaux Arts-style Palace of Fine Arts (now the Museum of Science and Industry). We will stop at Sherman Park, a gem of the Southside turn-of-the-century neighborhood parks, to see the recently restored murals in the 1894 field house. We'll also see William LeBaron Jenney's original design for Douglas Park and how Jens Jensen transformed it into his Prairie style with native vegetation.
Please arrive 20 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time for check-in.
