Chicago is unique among the world’s great waterfront cities because almost its entire lakeshore is public land – it belongs to all of us. But it didn’t come to us without a fight. Chicago’s Lakefront, written and hosted by WTTW’s Geoffrey Baer tells the story of scoundrels who scarred the landscape for personal gain, and heroes who fought selfless (and thankless) battles to win back the lakefront for the public.
The Burnham Plan is an important part of the documentary. It serves both as historical framework for how our existing urban landscape came to be, considers the Plan’s lasting impact and its role as a catalyst for forward, big thinking. The program Chicago’s Lakefront exists to bring our communities and region closer together by understanding more about our common history and the connections we all share to each other through this physical space.
The documentary will debut December 1, 2008 with multiple airings throughout the month of December and throughout 2009. A preview of the documentary is available by visiting the WTTW web site. [view preview online]
