The Wolf Lake Watershed Meets Daniel Burnham

A poster contest will ask third graders, among other youth, to depict how the Wolf Lake watershed is in keeping with Burnham's 1909 plan for the lakefront.  The contest will be held in conjunction with the 9th annual Wolf Lake Bi-State Wetlands, Wind & Water festival on May 23-24, 2009, and the 6th annual bi-state Active Living Fair at Wolf Lake on Oct. 3, 2009.

An essay contest for the 3rd annual Autumn Reception & Art Show on Oct. 24 will ask high school students to describe changes that could be made to the Wolf Lake watershed during the next century that would be in the Burnham spirit.

The purpose of the contests is to begin the process of instilling in the participants a spirit of stewardship for the lake.  Over 50 schools in Wolf Lake area communities, scout groups and other youth organizations will be invited to participate in the poster schools and dozen area high schools will be invited to participate in the essay contest.

Burnham's desire of public access to recreation at no cost is accompanied by a responsibility of the public to help maintain public lands for future generations.  These contests suggests that we all have a responsibility to make choices that will shape the way we live for generations and to do so in a bi-state way.
