Phase I of the Kankakee Riverfront Trail was begun—and will be completed—during the Centennial. The 6.5 mile-long trail will enhance local access to the Kankakee River and connect the city of Kankakee with Kankakee River State Park. This project advances three Green Legacy goals: connecting us to our rivers and streams, completing our regional trail system and expanding neighborhood green space.
The Kankakee River corridor is coming together as a premier open space and water resource, enhancing the green infrastructure in the southern part of our metropolitan region. Ultimately the trail system will extend west from the State Park to the Wauponsee Glacial Trail in Will County and then on to the 19,000-acre Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. The development of the trail is a collaborative effort by the City and County of Kankakee working with community organizations and property owners.
