Daniel H. Burnham and Prairie Avenue

Daniel H. Burnham and Prairie Avenue

Exhibit :

This exhibit will focus on the early career of Burnham & Root, beginning with the 1874 commission for the John Sherman house at 2100 S. Prairie Avenue. It was during the design and construction of this residence that Burnham met and married Sherman's daughter Margaret. Upon completion of the house, the Burnhams resided with the Shermans until the early 1880s. (Root soon after married the daughter of another Prairie Avenue resident and lived three blocks north of Burnham).

Burnham & Root received nearly a dozen additional commissions for new homes or major remodelings on Prairie Avenue over the next fifteen years. The exhibit will look at these commissions and will explore Sherman’s role in helping his new son-in-law to obtain them.   Architectural fragments from several of these buildings (now demolished), including mantels, windows, and decorative paneling will be exhibited.

The second part of the exhibit will focus on subscribers to the Plan of Chicago who were Prairie Avenue residents, including John J. Glessner.   Glessner's original copy of the Plan will be a centerpiece of the exhibit.
