Beyond Burham Class and Exhibition

How can Burnham’s vision for Chicago inspire young artists today? Throughout the 2008-2009 school year, The Chicago Academy for the Arts’ Urban Design class, an elective for 11th and 12th grade students, will focus on the Plan of Chicago.

The Chicago Academy for the Arts is located on Chicago Ave. between Ogden and Halsted, intersections and streets cited in the plan. Students’ fieldwork of these areas will accompany their reading the Plan, and their interdisciplinary projects will explore the historic and present "spirit" of Chicago, the plan’s legacy, as well as other pertinent issues in contemporary urban design and planning.

The class’ work will be showcased in an exhibition (tentative title Beyond Burnham) in April/May 2009 at the school. There will be a special event/opening with student presentations and guest speakers
