The Big Shoulders Fund provides support to the Catholic schools in the neediest areas of inner-city Chicago through scholarships, special education programs, instructional equipment, much needed facility imrpovements, faculty support and operating grants. Seventy-seven schools were each designated a separate Chicago neighborhood to study throughout this Centennial year. Fifth-grade students researched and reported on the assigned neighborhood, highlighting the past history, current situation and vision for the future of the assigned neighborhood. They also completed a map of each neighborhood.
Each neighborhood map as been stichted together to create one large tapestry map of the city. The students' drawings represent their visions for the future of each area and inspire visitors to take a look at the city with fresh eyes and vivid imaginations.
