Celebrate the Burnham Plan's open space vision with a visit to two of the region's most significant natural areas -- Illinois Beach State Park (Zion, IL) and Chiwaukee Prairie Natural Area (Pleasant Prairie, WI) -- at a time when they are at their most beautiful and active with spring bird migration! At Illinois Beach State Park marsh, sedge meadow, three kinds of prairie, sand savanna, health and foredunes combine to create an incomparable landscape. Chiwaukee Prairie is a complex of low swells and swales that are studded with blooming pucoons, betony, and a stunning display of shooting stars. We will have lunch at Ray Radigan's restaurant, a local jewel for many decades. The motorcoach will begin boarding at 6:30 a.m.; please bring water and dress for the weather. Binoculars and field guides will be useful. Led by Joel Greenberg, Author of A Natural History of the Chicago Region.
