Chicago’s grid is abstracted in a hovering net that defines the Education District’s eleven colleges and universities, 37,000 students and 10,000 faculty members. A web of cables holds panels of programmable LED nodes and the photovoltaic cells that power them. By day, its strands define spaces, casting delicate shadows on the streets. At night, its arrays of multicolored, changing LEDs are pixels in a city-sized video screen.
