The Burnham Plan Centennial - Bold Plans, Big Dreams

Program Partners

SWEDENBORG LIBRARY

The Swedenborg Library sponsors educational programs on practical spirituality and makes available to the public the work of the 18the Century Swedish scientist and seer Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg's writings on God's dynamic relationship to humankind, the afterlife, and Christian theology informed the spiritual outlook of Daniel H. Burnham and his family.

Daniel Burnham was confirmed into the Chicago Society of General Convention Swedenborgian Churches as a young man -- his parents, uncle, and grand-parents on his mother's side were active in building church communities in Chicago. Swedenborgian teachings that encourage a life of usefulness to society, and a profound faith in Divine Providence are evident in Burnham's life's work and his relations with his co-workers.

The Swedenborg Library's programs encourage ecumenical thought and discussions. The Library hosts Common Ground speakers in downtown Chicago, along with a variety of thinkers in contemporary spirituality.
