GOLDEN APPLE FOUNDATION

Golden Apple is an institution that recognizes gifted teachers, and also prepares and strengthens teachers who make a critical difference in the lives of all children. Special attention is given to those teaching children from disadvantaged schools, by providing professional development, workshops, seminars and the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence.

To commemorate the Centennial, Golden Apple hopes to partner with its Award-winning Golden Apple Fellows, and other volunteers to customize a new curriculum focus for the existing Storytelling Workshop which provides a means for teachers to learn best practices to teach their students how to use storytelling as a creative means of communication. The new workshop will focus on telling the rich history of Chicago and its neighborhoods and be implemented in the summer of 2009.

The new curriculum focus will continue in perpetuity as part of Golden Apple’s newest initiative, the Teaching Excellence Center. When completed in 2010, the Center will set a new standard for teacher professional development in the Chicago area, offering a complete range of seminars, workshops, and other opportunities that will impact teachers as individuals, generate whole-school change, and in turn significantly improve student performance. Golden Apple is working with local partners to renovate the Pullman Club, a central historic landmark of Chicago’s Pullman neighborhood, into an innovative facility for the Center.
